Hipgnosis buys independent publisher Big Deal Music | Music Ally

We know that Hipgnosis Songs Fund likes buying publishing catalogues, and sometimes recordings rights too. But now it’s also buying publishing companies. Well, one publishing company this morning: Big Deal Music, which owns rights in songs that have been recorded by Shawn Mendes, One Direction and Panic at the Disco among other artists.

This isn’t just about the 4,400-song catalogue though: Big Deal Music is being rebranded as Hipgnosis Songs Group and will continue operating as Hipgnosis’s fully-fledged publishing arm. “The acquisition provides Hipgnosis with a full service US music platform which is expected to enhance royalty income from its growing portfolio of songs, create new songs at an attractive cost and provide in-house US administration, and therefore increase control over its portfolio’s income,” as the announcement put it. So, Hipgnosis does want to start signing songwriters and creating new song copyrights, rather than just buying in everything, even if as the announcement went on to clarify: “this will be a small part of Hipgnosis’ overall business”.
