Deezer creates a new channel focusing on Black culture | Music Ally

We wrote about Apple Music and Amazon Music’s new playlists focusing on Black British music yesterday. Now Deezer is launching a new ‘Black Culture‘ channel on its service, with a global focus and an emphasis on podcasts as well as music.

The new channel will include a series of ‘100%’ branded playlists for artists: ‘100% Beyoncé’, ‘100% Nina Simone’, ‘100% Bob Marley’ etc, as well as genre-focused playlists under the ‘Black Icons…’ umbrella (‘Black Icons of R&B’, ‘Black Icons of Hip-Hop’ etc).

“Throughout history, black musicians have been making music the world loves. In more recent years, black podcast creators have hosted chart-topping shows. Yet not all black creators are getting the attention and respect they deserve,” said the new channel’s global editor Junior Foster. “We want to change that. Our new channel is a first step on a long journey.”

Deezer has also put together a diversity group to promote and help underrepresented creators and is undertaking diversity workshops at its offices around the world.
