As governments around the world mull their next moves in supporting businesses affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re seeing a surge in industry-backed bodies and reports pressing the politicians for action.
The latest example from music comes from the UK, and a new umbrella group covering the live music industry called Live.
It has commissioned a report from consultants Chris Carey and Tim Chambers exploring the “cliff edge” being faced by the sector in the UK, with the headline claim that 170,000 jobs will be lost in the industry by the end of 2020 if the government support that’s been in place so far is withdrawn.
This is based on calculations that more than 26,000 permanent jobs will be lost, and 144,000 ‘FTE’ (full time equivalent) roles including self-employed and freelance workers. The former figure would represent 50% of permanent roles in live music. You can read the full report here.
