African streaming service Mdundo has 5m monthly active users | Music Ally

Mdundo is one of the established music streaming services in Africa, and its CEO Martin Nielsen has been talking to Nigerian news site Pulse·ng about its latest figures, and the wider African music market.

According to the piece, Mdundo currently has more than five million monthly active users across Africa, including 3.5 million in its key markets of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria and Ghana. However, Nielsen thinks this is barely scratching the surface of the potential there. “We think the African market is potentially up to 150 million people who should be using our service,” he said. “When we looked at the music market in Sub-Saharan Africa, we have discovered that there are over 150 million people who still download mp3 files from illegal websites every month.” He went on to add that Mdundo now has 80,000 African artists signed up, and generated $0.3m in advertising sales last year.
