We’re still waiting to find out what the Trump administration will do in response to a judge blocking its ban of TikTok in the US.
We suspect the president won’t be too keen on its latest feature though: an in-app guide to the 2020 elections.
It will provide TikTok users with information about candidates; explain how to vote in each state; and will offer “educational videos about misinformation, media literacy, the elections process, and more”.
With one of the most high-profile sources of that misinformation being the president and his campaigners, this could be a recipe for further tensions.
Not that we’re criticising TikTok: like all the big social media platforms, it’s well aware of its potential to be misused during elections season, and its responsibilities to push back on that.
“TikTok isn’t the go-to app for breaking news or politics, and we don’t accept paid political ads on our app,” it stressed in a blog post.
“Still, we know TikTok is a home where Americans express themselves – and with that in mind, we’re focused on supporting our users with education and authoritative information on important public issues…”
