Roblox now has more than 150m monthly active users | Music Ally

Last week, Music Ally interviewed the global head of music for gaming platform Roblox, as he declared that the company was “open for business” to work with artists and labels. Now we’ve got some new figures to show what the potential of that business might be.

Roblox now has more than 150 million monthly active users, which is up from 115 million in February this year. That means the platform, a collection of games created for and by its community, has been adding around seven million new users a month this year.

As we’ve reported, Roblox is particularly popular with children and teenagers: one recent study suggested that half of all 9-12 year-olds in the US play Roblox every week.

In his interview with Music Ally, music boss Jon Vlassopulos stressed the fact that there is money to be made on Roblox – currently by developers of games for the platform, but potentially by artists too, for example by selling virtual merchandise.

There’s a new figure illustrating that too: Roblox says that it expects its community of developers to earn $250m in 2020, up from $110m in 2019. The company has also confirmed details of its first music deal, with label Monstercat: 51 of the company’s tracks will be available for developers to use for free in their games.
