It’s clearly the day for news about short-video apps with a musical angle. Byte is the app that launched early this year, created by Dom Hofmann, who was the co-founder of Vine back in the day.
“We’re bringing back 6-second looping videos and the community that loved them,” was its pitch to people who thought Vine’s owner Twitter had been too quick to kill it off in 2016.
Anyway, Byte did 1.3m downloads in its first week, and recently enjoyed a new spike (600k downloads in a single day) amid rumours that TikTok might be banned in the US. All of this being background for the news that Byte, like that rival, has an eye on music.
Last week it launched a new feature for people to add ‘sounds’ to their videos – and let other Byte users include those sounds in their own clips. “We built sounds quickly — it’s been a popular request. As such, there’s some functionality we haven’t gotten to yet,” announced Byte’s blog post.
And one of those features on the coming-soon list: “Create sounds from popular music”. Will this involve licensing deals? Let’s see how Byte approaches that.
