Stitcher is one of the longer-established podcast services, and now it has published a report exploring some of the podcasting trends of 2020 (and the last decade) based on its data.
Among the points: nearly 7m podcast episodes were published to Stitcher in 2019 alone; the top genre that year was true crime; the average show length has shrunk by 2.4 minutes since 2013; and there are now more than 52,000 ‘mini-series’ podcasts – the ones that are published in TV-style seasons.
The study also has an updated section covering podcast listeners’ habits during the Covid-19 pandemic. No surprises here: listening has dipped for most genres (our take: commuting is one of the peak listening times for podcasts, and a lot of people aren’t commuting at the moment) although the Kids & Family genre has seen an increase (again: because lots of children aren’t at school, and their parents are looking for shows for them to listen to).
