With 16 million monthly active users, Deezer is some way behind Spotify, but it’s still been able to see itself as the streaming leader in its homeland, France. Now a report from research firm Omdia suggests that even there, Spotify is now the leader.
“In November of 2019 Spotify rose to take 13 percent of the online audience in France, exceeding Deezer by 1 percentage point,” claimed Omdia yesterday. “By April 2020, Spotify’s share rose to 17 percent, increasing its lead over Deezer to 4 percentage points.”
The key here, though, is that both services are growing: Deezer grew from 12% of the French online audience in November to 13% in April. Still, it appears to be Spotify driving the growth of the market overall. “The proportion of online consumers using streaming music services in France increased by 5 percentage points over a six month period to reach 32 percent in April. Spotify was responsible for 4 out of those 5 percentage points.” According to industry body SNEP, there were 9.4 million paying music subscribers in France at the end of 2019 – more than 10% of the population.
