PPL’s 2019 ‘most played’ chart hogged by collaboration tracks | Music Ally

British collecting society PPL has announced its annual charts of the most played tracks and artists in the UK, based on data from radio, TV and public performance locations (pubs, bars, shops etc). No surprises for guessing who tops the artists chart: Ed Sheeran, the fourth time in five years he’s headed that list.

There’s a more interesting trend in PPL’s most played tracks chart of 2019, although again, it won’t be a huge surprise. The top four tracks were all collaborations, with Calvin Harris and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man’s ‘Giant’ on top, followed by collabs between Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus; Sam Smith and Normani; and Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.

PPL has explored the streaming era’s growth in collaborations before: in 2018 it revealed that collabs’ share of UK radio airplay had grown from 5% in 2008 to 22% in 2017.
