In January we reported on plans to hold an ‘AI Song Contest’ for “European teams of musicians, artists, scientists and developers” working with music-generating AI systems. It turns out they weren’t just Europeans: an Australian team called Uncanny Valley was announced as the winner of the contest this week with a track called ‘Beautiful The World’.
“The team trained their machine with audio samples of koalas, kookaburras and Tasmanian devils, giving the song a unique Australian twist,” revealed Dutch broadcaster VPRO, which co-organised the competition. “It also carries a positive social message: after the huge forest fires that ravaged the country over the past year and cost many animals their lives, nature has the ability to recover.”
As with the Eurovision contest, the voting was a mixture of the general public and an expert jury (the latter in this case being AI experts). The public vote went to ‘Beautiful the World’, and while the experts also rated it highly (thus making it the winner overall) their top pick was the wonderfully-titled ‘I’ll Marry You, Punk Come’ by the German team Dadabots x Portrait XO.
