ByteDance launches its first hardware: a smart lamp and screen | Music Ally

TikTok’s parent company is getting into the gadgets game, although its focus is firmly on education for now. ByteDance has unveiled its Dali ‘smart lamp’ in China.

It’s a desk lamp with a built in smartphone-style screen and a digital assistant. TechCrunch reported that the $119-equivalent device will be sold to parents for their children, with the parent then able to video call them from work to make sure they’re doing their homework.

This is part of a wider move into educational products by ByteDance in China as part of its Dali Education division. Right now the new smart lamp appears to be a China-only product.

Perhaps one day there’ll be a western equivalent with TikTok baked in, although on second thoughts, that’s not likely to be great news for kids’ homework productivity…
