It’s another week of wallet-wielding in the music publishing sector.
Hip-hop label and distributor Empire is launching a new publishing arm, led by former Kobalt exec Al McLean and UMPG / Slip-N-Slide veteran Vinny Kumar.
“Empire is all about having a clean ecosystem and unlocking the money,” CEO Ghazi Shami told Billboard. “Developing and launching a publishing company creates a symbiotic relationship with our distribution and recordings division.”
Meanwhile, fresh from buying publishing company Big Deal Music, Hipgnosis is back to its catalogue-acquiring business today, with a deal to buy the catalogue of Chrissie Hynde. Hipgnosis will now own 100% of her 164-song catalogue, including for the Pretenders.
