To make up for the first summer without Wacken in the festival's 31-year history, promoter ICS teamed up with German telco giant Telekom for a mixed-reality live program, July 29-Aug. 1, dubbed Wacken World Wide.

The overall view count reached 11 million live content video views, which includes are all views of the live stream and festival content on the various platforms such as Telekom's music platform MagentaMusik 360, Wacken World Wide and associated social media platforms during the festival period.

It was a mixture of live concerts on a mixed reality stage and legendary legendary W:O:A concerts including Iron Maiden, In Flames and Arch Enemy. Live band interviews were part of the program as well.

The live shows took place on a high-resolution LED stage floor and stage backdrop. As opposed to a green screen, where backdrops need to be created in post production, this so-called XR technology made it possible to bring real light and effects into the virtual world.

The artists were able to react in real time to what was happening on the LEDs around them.

The lineup featured Sabaton, Heaven Shall Burn, Kreator, Blind Guardian, In Extremo, Hämatom and Beyond The Black.

Wacken Open Air co-founder Thomas Jensen commented: "We would like to thank our fantastic fans, our team and our partners, above all, of course, Telekom, to whom we owe this incredible XR stage, who supported us in marketing and broadcasted our program all over the world.

"We would also like to extend our gratitude to Live Nation Brand Partnership & Media for their commitment in terms of production and licensing, our creative agency Buntmetall, our PR agency Head Of PR and Jung von Matt, who supported us in all creative questions and in brand development.

"Together we made Wacken World Wide become a success. It is incredibly nice to see how our fans celebrate the heavy metal together, we were able to bring to their homes all over the world. Even though it has been quiet in the village of Wacken this year, we were able to feel and experience the energy and joy of the fans in front of the screens!"

Wacken Co-founder Holger Hübner added: "The first edition of Wacken World Wide was a full success. Together with our fans and partners, we are extremely happy about the varied program and the numerous exciting shows that we have been able to experience in the past few days. Wacken is now at home all over the world!"

Wacken World Wide set a new viewership record for Magenta Musik 360, the music program of Telekom. "With the new mixed reality stage technology we were able to take the next step in terms of innovation. We have connected fans and artists in Telekom's best network worldwide. Wacken World Wide was a great experience – for every music fan," said Michael Schuld, Head of TV and Entertainment at Telekom.
