Apple Music launches Africa Rising artist discovery initiative | Music Ally

Apple Music really is going big on music from Africa. The service’s latest move is a bi-monthly ‘artist program and companion playlist‘ which it says will focus on emerging talent from across Africa.

Every two months, a new artist will be chosen to focus on – Nigerian-born Omah Lay is the first – with plans to “use the full force of the platform to amplify them to music fans in Africa and around the world”.

The new program follows the launch of a Beats 1 show called ‘Africa Now Radio’, which also has a companion playlist; news that Apple’s artist-development subsidiary Platoon has been working with 88 musicians across Africa; and the selection of Afropop star Rema as the global service’s latest ‘Up Next’ artist pick.

In separate, non-Africa-related Apple news, the service has also launched an expanded collection of Ibiza-themed playlists, working with dance labels like Defected and Anjunabeats for locked-down clubbers who may be missing their island raving this summer.
