In May, the British government set up a ‘Cultural Renewal Taskforce’ to help the arts, sports and culture industries back on their feet after the Covid-19 lockdown.
Now charity Julie’s Bicycle has gathered a range of artists and music industry people to write a letter to Oliver Dowden, the relevant minister, to demand that a “just and green cultural recovery strategy” be at the heart of the taskforce’s plans.
“We urge government to commit to a rapid, just and green cultural recovery combining targeted public investment, clear policy signals, and implementation of Climate Change Act obligations extended to the Cultural Renewal strategy,” explained the letter, which was jointly signed by the organisation’s CEO Alison Tickell and its chair Tony Wadsworth (formerly of EMI and the BPI).
Among the more than 450 people co-signing the letter are Nile Rodgers, Brian Eno, Peter Quicke (AIM/Ninja Tune – who talked about the climate emergency at the AIM Connected conference in February), Karen Emmanuel (Key Productions), Melvin Benn (Festival Republic), Merck Mercuriadis (Hipgnosis) and Jamie Oborne (Dirty Hit / The 1975).
