Global music industry body the IFPI is opening its first office in sub-Saharan Africa: in Kenya’s capital city Nairobi. It’s also appointing a regional director for the region, Angela Ndambuki, whose remit will cover 46 African countries to “promote the value of recorded music, campaign for the rights of record producers and expand the commercial uses of recorded music”. She was previously CEO of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The opening of the office raises hopes that the IFPI will be tracking more data from sub-Saharan Africa in its annual Global Music Report, for which country-level data for the region has been a gap. In this year’s report, the IFPI only tracked $4.3m of overall revenues from the region – excepting South Africa, which was split out as an individual market – including $2.3m of streaming revenues.
