Electric Blockaloo virtual festival delayed and renamed | Music Ally

Two risks of organising a virtual music festival online. One: holding it within a game that might get a big update slap bang in the middle of when your event is kicking off.

Two: choosing a name that might be seen as similar to a currently-notorious movement that includes racists who want to foment violent civil war.

The poor organisers of the Electric Blockaloo festival have fallen foul of both, but they’re taking swift action accordingly.

The festival was due to take place on 25-28 June using the Minecraft game, but an update to the game scheduled for 23 June would have thrown a big spanner in the works: attendees who’d updated their version of Minecraft wouldn’t have been able to get in.

Cue a delay: the festival will now take place on 9-13 July. It won’t be called Electric Blockaloo though: although the name was intended as a reference to 80s breakdancing film Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, that last word is currently more associated with a US group called the Boogaloos which includes libertarians but also white supremacists.

The event will now be called Rave Family Block Fest.
