Spotify has announced that it will make streaming to connected speakers available on its free ad-supported tier very soon. Until now, device connectivity has only been available to paid Spotify Premium users.
“Any connected hardware partner will now have the opportunity to use eSDK 3 to allow millions of users to enjoy Spotify Free on their Spotify Connect-enabled speakers,” announced Spotify. The support for its free tier will be available on both new and, via software updates, on existing speakers.
While the shift does not yet include Amazon and Google smart speakers, it is a major one designed to funnel more users to its free tier. The rate of conversions from free to paid users has increased in recent months, according to Spotify.
The upgrade also make the free version of Spotify more accessible in the car, where the streamer has pledged to take on broadcast radio.
