Tidal expands into Brazil via Vivo partnership – with subs costing less than $4 a month | Music Business Worldwide

Tidal has signed a partnership to help it crack the Brazilian music market after agreeing a deal with local telecommunications company Vivo.

All 75+ million of Vivo’s mobile customers will be offered plans that start at R$ 4.99 (US $1.2) a week with the first seven days free, or R$ 15.99 (US $3.9) a month with the first 30 days free.

An exclusive offer for students is priced at R$ 7.99 (US $1.9) a month with the first 30 days free.

The tie-up arrives shortly after the announcement of a similar agreement with African mobile network MTN.

To celebrate the collaboration, Tidal will offer an exclusive concert for Vivo customers and guests with its artist-owner Nicki Minaj on September 26 in São Paulo.

Brazil is Latin America’s largest market and the ninth biggest recorded music market in the world, according to 2017 IFPI figures.

Last year, the country’s music market returned to growth and generated recorded music revenue of $295.8m, up nearly 18% by $45m on 2016.

This growth followed a 3% decline in 2016.

Amazon Music is set to be launching in Brazil, following Spotify’s arrival in 2014, and Apple Music, which arrived in the region after its global launch in 2016.
