Emeli Sandé signs with PPL for neighbouring rights representation | Music Business Worldwide

Four-time BRIT Award winner Emeli Sandé has moved to UK-based music licensing company, PPL, for the administration of her international neighbouring rights collections.

The British singer-songwriter joins a PPL roster for international collections which includes Bastille, Duke Dumont, Jessie J, Paolo Nutini, Rag‘n’Bone Man, Rita Ora and Tinie Tempah.

Sandé’s international neighbouring rights were previously represented by Kobalt, following its acquisition of Fintage House’s music divisions in 2016 for $29.8m.

PPL announced its largest ever distribution of £150.7 million in late June with over 86,280 performers and record companies receiving a payment.

This latest distribution included a record international collections value of £25.7 million – up 39 percent (£7.2 million) on the previous record (£18.5 million in September 2017).

PPL’s international collections have increased from £6 million in 2006 to nearly £50 million in 2017.

During this period, PPL collected over £355 million internationally for performers and record companies.

Emeli Sandé commented: “Making sure that artists at all stages of their career get paid fairly for their music is absolutely vital and the team at PPL play such an important role in making this happen. PPL has a strong reputation for looking after the rights of performers and I know my collections are in safe hands whenever my music is played in the UK or globally.”

Peter Leathem, Chief Executive Officer at PPL commented: “We are delighted to welcome an artist as globally popular as Emeli Sandé to the PPL family for her international collections. She joins a strong roster of talent that we are proud to represent. PPL’s international collections reached a record high in 2017, totalling almost £50 million; our in-house expertise and knowledge of neighbouring rights, combined with our longstanding relationships with global partners and investment in leading technology, puts us in in an excellent position to maximise revenue for our artists when their recorded music is played overseas.”

Sandé is well-known for her UK Singles Chart Top Five singles ‘Heaven’ (No. 2), ‘Next To Me’ (No. 2) and ‘Clown’ (No. 4), as well as No.1 singles with Professor Green (‘Read All About It’) and Labrinth (‘Beneath Your Beautiful’).

Sandé was awarded an MBE in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to music and also received the PPL-sponsored BASCA Gold Badge Award in the same year for her “unique and inspirational contribution to music”.Music Business Worldwide
