Spotify’s UK team launches Who We Be podcast with DJ Semtex | Music Business Worldwide

Spotify continues to up its game in the world of talk radio-style content.

Today the platform has announced the launch of a new original UK podcast, Who We Be.

Hosted by acclaimed British DJ, broadcaster and author DJ Semtex (pictured), it promises to ‘highlight the best in new and emerging sounds from the UK’.

Inspired by Spotify’s popular grime and hip hop playlist of the same name (current follower count: over 215k), the Who We Be podcast is a new 10-part Spotify series which will be released every other week.

The inaugural guest of the first Who We Be podcast, available now, is UK artist Dave – the winner of the MOBO Award for Best Newcomer 2017.

The 19-year-old counts the likes of Drake and Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer as supporters.

“The story of ‘Who We Be’ is one which is only just getting started.”

James Cator, Spotify’s Head of podcasts, EMEA, said: “Spotify’s ‘Who We Be’ is the UK’s leading grime and hip hop playlist, with over 200,000 followers and millions of monthly streams, so we’re very excited to work with DJ Semtex and guests to offer those fans a new, behind-the-scenes look at the grime and rap scene.”

Who We Be saw its first brand extension in November last year with a sold-out live show at London’s Alexandra Palace featuring the likes of Giggs, Cardi B and J Hus.

Austin Daboh, Senior Editor at Spotify, added: “The story of ‘Who We Be’ is one which is only just getting started. From the playlist – which has grown to the become the #1 urban playlist in the UK – to November’s massive ‘Who We Be Live’ event at Alexandra Palace, and now the launch of the podcast, Who We Be’s success is a testament to the passion that exists around UK street sounds.”

‘Who We Be’ is the latest addition to Spotify’s growing portfolio of original podcasts.

Out of the UK, these podcasts also include ‘We Need To Talk About’, a series hosted by BAFTA-winning actor, writer, producer and director Jolyon Rubinstein, and ‘Shaun Keaveny’s Show & Tell’, with more to be announced in 2018.

Following Dave, the second instalment of ‘Who We Be’ will feature Semtex in conversation with another well-known figure in UK rap, Sneakbo.Music Business Worldwide
