Spotify and Kobalt fall out over Eminem copyright lawsuit | Music Ally

In August last year, we reported on a copyright infringement lawsuit filed against Spotify by Eminem’s publisher Eight Mile Style, based on around 250 songs from the company’s catalogue. The latest development in that case is a surprise: Spotify is dragging Kobalt Music Publishing into the lawsuit, claiming that the latter company is at fault.

Spotify’s legal filing, as reported by Billboard, claims that Kobalt led it to believe that it had the rights to represent Eight Mile Style’s catalogue, and so Spotify paid Kobalt the royalties due for those songs. For its part, Kobalt has responded by claiming that Spotify’s filing “mischaracterises” both the services it provides to Eight Mile Style, and its licensing terms with the streaming service. It plans to “vigorously defend” the case.
