The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a ‘Culture at Risk Business Support Fund’ with £2.3m set aside for the UK capital’s creative and cultural industries. It includes a £450k grant to the Music Venues Trust to support grassroots music venues in London. “These venues are some of the most impacted by the current crisis because the costs of running a venue in London are so high. This funding from the Mayor of London means that MVT will be able to increase the support on offer to each and every venue,” said Beverley Whitrick of the Music Venues Trust.
Also in the UK, the ongoing #loverecordstores campaign has announced plans for ‘Love Record Stores Day’ on 20 June, filling the gap left by the second postponement of the annual Record Stores Day, which had been moved to that date. Love Record Stores Day (with the hashtag #LRSD) will be encouraging music fans to buy vinyl online from record outlets “to give participating stores the significant spike in custom they normally receive on Record Store Day while helping music fans satisfy their appetite for great music during this difficult period”. The day will see a series of online live performances and DJ sets. Finally, in Japan plans are afoot for an eight-day YouTube Music ‘Stay Home #WithMe’ initiative. It’ll see 50 Japanese artists streaming (past) concert footage on their YouTube channels, to support fans who are still self-isolating.
