YouTube Kids may be the top video streaming app of 2020 so far | Music Ally

Apptopia is one of a cluster of app analytics firms (see also: App Annie, Sensor Tower) mining the app stores for data on the size and growth of the apps market.

Its latest report is co-published with a customer engagement firm called Braze, and focuses on the video streaming world. The part that caught our eye was the report’s table of the top 10 streaming apps in 2020 so far, measured by time spent within the app.

It’s no surprise to see Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video in the top five globally, with Indian service Hotstar – and Disney+ lurking in sixth place. But none of the apps mentioned above were in the top slot.

That’s taken by YouTube Kids, YouTube’s official app for children. It’s also the top video app (by this metric, according to this report) in Europe and the US, when these regions are broken out individually. With many schools having closed across the world amid the Covid-19 pandemic, perhaps this is no surprise.

Indeed, the report points to a wider rise in usage of video apps. “In March, we saw a 30.7% increase in streaming sessions…” If Tiger King on Netflix is one of the big drivers for adults, it seems that YouTube Kids’ mix of music, cartoons and gaming videos is doing it for children.
