Downtown-owned AdRev acquires music data analytics firm, Simbals | Music Business Worldwide


Downtown-owned digital rights management provider AdRev has acquired Bordeaux, France-based metadata analytics company Simbals.

The transaction integrates Simbals’ patented audio fingerprinting technology and machine learning-driven analytics into AdRev’s existing technology.

The acquisition also brings in-house Simbals’ team of audio and signal analysis researchers and scientists, along with key technology talent.

AdRev is part of a portfolio of businesses owned by AVL Digital Group, which was acquired by Downtown Music Holdings for $200 million last March.

Founded by a team of researchers from the University of Bordeaux, Simbals has developed a global reputation as experts in audio signal processing and data structure algorithms.

Simbals’ audio content recognition enables the identification at scale of music used in various video and audio formats, such as TV, film, and radio, as well as in live performances or on streaming platforms.

Prior to the acquisition, Simbals served as a key technology partner for AdRev.
