With offices and employees spread across the globe, sometimes it takes time to get to know everyone. In our series ‘What The #&@$ Do You Do?!’ (WTFDYD), The Orchard highlights Orchadites from all over the world to learn more about their role at The Orchard and experience working in the music industry.
Hi Sandivel! Can you tell us what the #&@$ you do at The Orchard?
I joined The Orchard in October of 2018 working out of the Mexico City office. I run and manage the Artist Services department in Mexico! A large part of my role is driving deal signing processes and negotiating the fees, terms and services that are offered to artists and their management. I coordinate with artists and their management team on their project development, new releases, or special projects.
How does your role and department fit into The Orchard?
The Artist Services department is a new window for the company to explore new opportunities in many areas. Adding Artist Services teams, especially across the globe, allows The Orchard to expand its offerings and tap into new markets.
How did you first get started in the music industry?
My first job in the music industry was as an intern at MTV in the Talent and Artist Relations department. The Talent and Artist Relations department was in charge of negotiating video rotations and interviews with managers and labels. I really enjoyed assisting in special events logistics. One of my favorite events I worked on while at MTV was ‘MTV LATAM 2009’. That event had performers like Placebo, Jesse & Joy, Bomba Estereo, and more. I loved and enjoyed my time working at MTV. It was one of my first experiences meeting a lot of people from the music industry from whom I learned a lot and luckily I still keep in touch with, or even still work with.
What’s your favorite thing about working at The Orchard?
What I love about The Orchard is that we are a global company. From the outside, you’d assume it’d take a while to get an answer from colleagues that work in different time zones or different territory offices. I’m happy to say that is not the case. I always try to emphasize to my clients and artists that even though we have offices in different time zones, there is always someone that can help whenever necessary. The Orchard is a big family to me — I have new and very good friends across the company. The Orchard is also encouraging and allows you to learn all the time. There is always someone who is willing to help when necessary.
What’s your favorite tradition at The Orchard?
My favorite tradition is definitely seeing the best photos of the year from each territory at our annual end of year summit in New York. It’s great to come together and see what each office has accomplished throughout the year.
What advice do you have for independent artists / those who want to get into the industry?
Work as hard as you can, have a clear idea of where you want to go and really work on that plan. Nothing is going to get done with a magic wand. Understand the processes, pay attention to details, get informed on the music business and how the business and technologies are changing. Be on top of these changes so you can apply the best practices for your project. And get a manager, someone you connect with and trust ! It will make your life much easier.
What artist have you been listening to on repeat?
Hyukoh! Your day will be made better just by listening to them. Their new album is amazing! I recommend listening to this album in order, track by track.
How do you discover new music?
Half of the time I’ll find new music through playlists and the other half is through friend suggestions.
What’s something you’ve learned outside of work that helps you to be your best self at work?
In this industry, you encounter different egos everyday. There are ongoing negotiations with managers and artists, and sometimes complications that come with negotiations. From my previous jobs and experiences, I’ve had both positive and negative experiences, which enabled me to build my own character.

Hola Sandivel! Podrías contarnos what the #&@$ you do en The Orchard?
Me uní a The Orchard México en Octubre 2018. Dirijo el departamento de Artist Services a nivel local. En gran parte, mi posición es impulsar procesos para firma de nuevos acuerdos, negociando tarifas, porcentajes, términos y servicios a ofrecer directamente a los artistas y sus managers. Coordino a su vez el desarrollo de su proyecto, nuevos lanzamientos o proyectos especiales.
Cómo tu posición y departamento encaja con The Orchard?
El departamento de Artist Services es una nueva ventana para la compañía, en la que exploramos nuevas oportunidades en diferentes áreas, incluir equipos de Artist Services, especialmente en diferentes territorios, permite a The Orchard ampliar su oferta de servicios y da oportunidad de introducirse en nuevos territorios.
¿Cómo empezaste en la industria de la música?
Mi primer trabajo en la industria de la Música fue como intern en MTV México, en el departamento de Talent and Artist Relations. Este departamento estaba a cargo de negociar con disqueras y managers la rotación de videos, entrevistas o actividades especiales. Amé apoyar en logística de eventos especiales, uno de mis eventos favoritos mientras trabajaba en en MTV fueron los premios MTV LATAM 2019, en el cual hubo participaciones de Placebo, Jesse&Joy, Bomba Estéreo entre otros. Disfruté al máximo trabajar en MTV, fue una de las primeras experiencias en las que conocí a mucha gente de la industria de la música de las cuales he aprendido bastante y con muchas aún sigue existiendo relación personal o laboral.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de trabajar en The Orchard?
Me encanta que es un empresa Global, desde afuera podrías asumir que los procesos de y tener una respuesta de nuestros compañeros podría tomarte una vida, pero no es así! Siempre trato de enfatizar con los clientes y artistas que a pesar de que tenemos oficinas con diferentes husos horarios, siempre hay alguien que puede ayudar en caso de ser necesario. The Orchard es una gran familia para mi, tengo nuevos y muy buenos amigos en toda la empresa. La empresa además de ser muy alentadora, te permite conocer cosas nuevas todo el tiempo.
¿Cuál es tu tradición favorita en The Orchard?
Mi tradición favorita es definitivamente ver las mejores fotos del año de cada territorio al final del año en la convención anual en Nueva York. Es increíble reunirse y ver lo que cada oficina ha logrado durante todo el año.
¿Cuál sería un consejo que darías para un artista independiente / Aquellos que quieren introducirse en la industria de la música?
Trabaja duro, ten ideas claras de lo que buscan y actúen realmente con y sobre un plan de trabajo. Nada se hace por acto de magia. Entender los procesos, poner atención a detalles, estar realmente informados sobre lo que sucede en la industria, tecnologías, tendencias y cómo esto va cambiando y cómo lo puedes aplicar en tu proyecto. Por favor, ¡Consíguete un manager!, alguien con quien conectes y confíes, hará tu vida muy sencilla!
¿Qué arista has escuchado sin parar?
Hyukoh! Harán tu día increíble, creéme! Su nuevo disco es INCREÍBLE! Recomiendo escucharlo en orden, track por track.
¿Cómo descubres nueva música?
Parte de a través de playlist en diferentes plataformas y otra parte a través de amigos, nos compartimos bandas, canciones, etc :)
¿Qué es eso que has aprendido a lo largo del tiempo que te ha ayudado a ser mejor en tu trabajo?
En esta industria te encuentras con muchos egos todo el tiempo con los que tienes que lidiar. A veces hay negociaciones en curso que vienen con diversas complicaciones y más, cuando trabajas con managers o artistas directamente. De mis trabajos y experiencias anteriores, tuve experiencias positivas y negativas, lo que me ha permitido desarrollar mi propio carácter.
