We can’t ignore the bad news for our industry coming out of this Covid-19 pandemic, but writing about the positive things – people, companies and industry bodies taking action and providing support – has felt important.
Today’s crop of news includes Universal Music talking about some of the things it’s doing: a UMG All Together Now Foundation to support employees in hardship; interest-free royalty advances and fee waivers for artists, songwriters and distributed indie labels; and direct support to organisations like MusiCares Covid-19 Relief Fund and Help Musicians UK. The group is also maintaining a list of its artists’ livestreams and fundraising activities.
Elsewhere, Australian collecting society APRA is paying its live performance royalties early, in May rather than November; the UK’s Music Venue Trust is trying to build a £1m ‘fighting fund’ to help independent venues facing permanent closure; and last weekend’s ‘Stream Aid’ on Twitch raised around $2.8m for the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
