TikTok crosses 1.5 billion downloads | Music Business Worldwide


TikTok has surpassed 1.5 billion downloads worldwide on the App Store and Google Play, according to new stats released by mobile intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

The new stats also reveal that TikTok is currently the third most downloaded non-gaming app in 2019, behind WhatsApp (707.4m) and Messenger (636.2m).

Facebook and Instagram come in at No. 4 and No. 5 with 587m and 376.2m downloads, respectively.

India has been the main driver of TikTok downloads across the App Store and Google Play, with 466.8m, or 31%, of all unique installs coming from the country.

Lifetime user spending in TikTok has hit $175 million worldwide across the App Store and Google Play.

To date in 2019, TikTok has generated $115.3m from user spending.

TikTok is growing at an phenomenal pace.  As noted by Sensor Tower’s blog post, the platform crossed 1 billion downloads in February 2019 and has taken under nine months to generate a further 500m.

TikTok’s owner ByteDance could launch a paid music streaming service to rival the likes of Spotify and Apple Music next month (December) according to an article published by the Financial Times yesterday (November 17).

Citing people familiar with the matter, the article states that the Chinese company is currently negotiating global licenses with Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Music.

Beijing-based ByteDance was founded by software engineer Zhang Yiming in 2012 and is valued at around $75 billion.Music Business Worldwide
