Happy May, and happy Thursday!
Some updates before going into this week's topic:
👉 Two brand-new episodes of the Water & Music podcast are out now: a conversation with Kero One on the past, present and future of lo-fi hip-hop, and a deep-dive with Alex Bonavia into all things music marketing in an era where artists are their own de facto media properties and brands. The episodes are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, Overcast, Pocket Casts and wherever else you enjoy listening to audio!
👉 I wrote an article for the April 20 issue of Billboard Magazine about how all types of music companies are trying to cash in on distribution as the next big gold mine, even though the actual business of distribution remains precarious and low-margin. If that article isn't enough for you, I shared some bonus material on Patreon that didn't make it into the final version.
👉 I'll be at the Music Biz conference in Nashville next week, moderating two panels: #NEXTGEN_NOW 2.0 (ft. Derrick Aroh, Rosa Asciolla, Salomon Palacios and Cassadee Pope) and International Music Rights (ft. Caroline Champarnaud, Joe Conyers and Barbara Finney).
👉 Starting this month, I'm tweaking how Patreon supporters vote on future newsletter issues, to welcome a wider range of ideas rather than making coverage a matter of binary, yes/no choices. Instead of voting between two topics on an issue-by-issue basis, $3+/month members will now get vote on a group of five topics on a month-by-month basis, with the opportunity to select multiple topics at once. The first such poll is now available on my Patreon page and remains open until May 5!
