Mondelez explores CBD-infused products | Advertising Age

Mondelez International, the company behind Ritz Crackers and Cadbury chocolate, says it’s exploring the use of CBD in snacks—but don't expect to find it in your Oreos.

"We’ve ... been looking at what are the claimed benefits from CBD,” Mondelez CEO Dirk Van de Put said in a recent interview with CNBC. “We’re getting ready, but obviously we want to stay within what is legal and play it the right way.”

The company would also keep the oil clear of certain brands, he said: "Our view on it is that we have a number of family brands, Oreos would be an example, so we feel a bit hesitant doing anything with CBD in family brands. But we have other brands and new brands we can do."

(In a statement, however, a Mondelez spokeswoman told Ad Age that all current brands are off the table: "Our current range of brands are family oriented and we don’t ... intend to bring any cannabis or CBD products under these brands.")

Large food manufacturers like Mondelez have held back on producing CBD-infused products. The snack-food giant is waiting on the Food and Drug Administration to provide clarity on what is and isn’t allowed, Van de Put said.

The space is not clear,” he told CNBC. “I think it’s a bit clearer with the non-food products.”

Current FDA regulations don’t allow CBD to be added to food or beverages, but a public hearing at FDA headquarters is set for May 31.
