In February 2018, after an Association of National Advertisers study found that 55 percent of adults believe women are portrayed negatively in media, AT&T Communications Chief Brand Officer Fiona Carter persuaded the company to publicly commit to remove all bias from its advertising and media by the year-end. She also committed to scoring all ads using a Gender Equality Measure to identify bias and creating an “Inclusion Playbook” to ensure all creative teams became more inclusive. Shaw has strongly promoted female and diverse directors, supporting Free the Bid and launching “AT&T Presents: Untold Stories,” an initiative with the Tribeca Film Festival to award underrepresented filmmakers $1 million. This year’s winners were Asian female directors Sasie Sealy and Angela Cheng.
