London-based recording studios used by Stormzy, Jess Glynne up for sale | Music Business Worldwide

One of the UK’s more modern (and discreet) landmark recording studios, The Gin Factory, is up for sale.

Based in Clerkenwell, London, the facility boasts 12 different recording rooms, breakout areas, artist lounge and a small office over 7,500 sq ft.

It was co-founded (and is currently co-owned), by Soho Music Group founder (and UK sync sector superstar) Kate Young and producer/composer/recording artist MJ Cole.

Artists to have recorded there in recent years include Stormzy, Craig David, Idris Elba, Paloma Faith, Dizzee Rascal, Tinie Tempah, Jess Glynne, Kylie, Professor Green and most of One Direction in their solo capacities.

The opportunity to sell has arisen due to the ongoing growth of Young’s Soho Music which recently added a new brand partnership team – Music Artists Partnerships – to its highly successful sync business and subsequently needs significantly more office space than is available within The Gin Factory complex.

“One thing that makes it really special are the high profile producers, songwriters and artists who work here; it’s a unique, family environment.”

Young explains: “We’ve grown really quickly over the last three or four years. When I moved in to the office above the studios, there were three of us, now we’re a big team so the space just doesn’t work for us anymore, especially given the projected growth for next year”.

She adds that it will be tough to hand over the keys to The Gin Factory, not simply because of the body of work that has been created there, but also the effort that went into making it a world class facility.

“We took it on in 2013; it was a completely derelict warehouse – no power, no water, nothing,” says Young. “We gutted it and built it from scratch and with MJ Cole heavily involved in the acoustic design, nothing was compromised. It was a total labour of love which we have sadly out grown.

“The result is that all the rooms are genuinely amazing; they were built by Munro Acoustics and Miloco – and if you’re familiar with studios designers you’ll know that they’re both the best in the business.

“On top of that, what makes it really special are the high profile producers, songwriters and artists who work here; it’s a unique, family environment.”
