Primary Wave buys Sly & Robbie music publishing catalog | Music Business Worldwide

Primary Wave Music Publishing is on a spending spree.

Earlier this month it revealed that it acquired the Count Basie catalog and signed deals with Pete Waterman and Kenny Loggins.

Now it’s completed its acquisition of the Sly and Robbie music publishing catalog.

Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare’s work can be heard on the likes of Murder She Wrote by Chaka Demus & Pliers.

The duo also produced the OMI hit Cheerleader, which reached No.1 in 20 countries including the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, Ireland, Sweden, and Germany.

Assets acquired by Primary Wave include Sly and Robbie’s interests in Damien Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock, Pitbull’s El Taxi, Omi’s Cheerleader, Chaka Demus & Pliers’ Murder She Wrote, and Grace Jones Pull Up To The Bumper.

The duo teamed up in the mid-1970s after establishing themselves separately in Jamaica as professional musicians.

Island Records’ Chris Blackwell made them the core of The Compass Point All Stars that produced classic records for iconic artists like Grace Jones. In the early 1990s.

The prolific rhythm section pioneered the legendary Rockers-style beat which replaced the then-prevalent One Drop rhythm.
