Downtown signs Theophilus London to his first music publishing deal | Music Business Worldwide

Downtown Music Publishing has inked rapper, singer-songwriter, and fashion entrepreneur Theophilus London to his first publishing agreement, covering his entire song catalog.

London has previously collaborated with the likes of Kanye West, Solange Knowles, Big Boi of OutKast, A$AP Rocky, Mark Ronson, Azealia Banks, Ariel Pink, Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, and Sara Quin of Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara.

London appeared alongside Paul McCartney and Allan Kingdom on West’s All Day single in 2015, which debuted live at the BRIT Awards and received nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards the following year.

“Theophilus is a true artist. I’ve always loved his music and admired how his incredible talents push culture forward,” said Gould. “He exemplifies the type of creative with whom we strive to partner here at Downtown. I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with Theo and the indie-pop team.”

Ben Willis from Theophilus’ management company added, “When my partner Carlo and I were chatting about the roll-out for Theo’s new project, we knew that the best way to maximize our efforts was to have a great publishing partner. The first company that came to mind was Downtown – someone that was more boutique, but also had a great roster of tastemaker artists. And since our good friend Andrew Gould just took the helm there, we knew he would see the vision – and he did. We couldn’t be happier to have Theophilus as a part of their family!”

The Trinidad-born, Brooklyn-bred artist began his career with a series of mixtapes that attracted major label attention, leading to London’s signing with Reprise/Warner Bros. for the release of his studio debut, the Lovers Holiday EP, in 2011.

Later that year, his first full-length studio album Timez Are Weird These Days was released, peaking at number 30 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart.

London released his second studio album, Vibes, in 2014, which was executive produced by West and also featured Leon Ware (Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye) and new jack swing forefathers the Force MDs.

In the world of fashion, Theophilus has collaborated with brands like Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, and Cole Haan.

Theophilus’ latest project, Nights B4 Bebey, was released in July, 2018 and previews his forthcoming album (TBA).

He has also been teasing an upcoming project with Australian psychedelic rock band Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, to be released under the moniker Theo Impala.

Established in 2007, Downtown Music Publishing runs offices in New York, Nashville, Los Angeles, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Paris, and Sydney.

The company’s catalog covers writers and artists such as The Beatles, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco, Hans Zimmer, The Kinks, One Direction, Mötley Crüe, Robin Thicke, Naughty Boy, Hardwell, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Santigold, Carla Bruni, and Social Distortion.
