Spotify sells Student Plan at $0.99 for 3 months because ‘students have plenty of other things they want to spend their money on’ | Music Business Worldwide

Spotify is offering students in the US a Premium subscription for just $0.99 for three months as part of an upgraded bundle deal that now includes access to TV network Showtime as well as Hulu.

The discounted offer is only available to new users and rises to the standard $4.99-a-month Student Plan after the trial period and for current subscribers.

Announcing the cheap trial, a Spotify blog post reads: [The $0.99 offer exists] because we know students have plenty of other things they want to spend their money on — textbooks, for example ;)’

That winky smile might not go down too well in major label land.

A number of senior execs recently told us that they are closely following Spotify’s ARPU [Average Revenue Per User], which has seen a perilous decline in recent years –  largely thanks to a combination of telco bundles, Family and Student Plans, plus market-sensitive pricing.

According to MBW’s calculations based on Spotify’s fiscal filings, the average Spotify subscriber worldwide is now paying approximately USD $30 less per year for their account than they were in 2015 ($8.16 per month in 2015 vs. $5.83 in Q2 2018.)

The current Spotify Premium for Students plan offers unlimited and on-demand access to music and podcasts for $4.99, as well as a subscription to Hulu’s streaming library of TV and movie hits.

Showtime has now been added to the the plan, offering a wider selection of TV programming and movies.

Alex Norström, Chief Premium Officer, Spotify said: “Spotify Premium has just changed the content game for students.

“Never before have students had this level of streaming entertainment options, at this unprecedented value, all in one package.”

“By joining forces with SHOWTIME and continuing our relationship with Hulu, Spotify Premium is now able to give students a complete world of music and video content, shows and film.

“This latest offer for U.S. students—both the millions already on Spotify Premium and those who are new—really is huge.
