MBW understands that Richard Constant, one of Universal Music Group’s most respected and senior legal minds, is retiring after serving the major (and predecessor PolyGram) for more than 35 years.
Constant (pictured inset) has been a key figure at UMG during many of its biggest market moves – including, in the past few years, the $1.9bn 2012 buyout of EMI Music and the 2014 acquisition of Eagle Rock Entertainment.
MBW is told that the 63-year-old has made the decision to retire, and will step down in the summer.
A formal announcement is expected in the near future.
He first joined the music business as part of PolyGram’s group legal department in 1980, becoming General Counsel of the company a decade later.
PolyGram was then acquired by Seagram – and merged into Universal Music Group – in 1998.
Constant was made General Counsel of Universal Music Group International that year, adopting legal, business affairs and government affairs responsibility for UMG outside the US.
At UMGI, Constant became an essential member of a highly successful international team led by Sir Lucian Grainge and Max Hole.
He studied law at Cambridge and qualified as a lawyer in 1978.Music Business Worldwide
